Travelling Light by Tove Jansson (SoB)

Translated into English for the first time, Travelling Light takes us into new Tove Jansson territory.

A professor arrives in a beautiful Spanish village only to find that her host has left and she must cope with fractious neighbours alone; a holiday on a Finnish Island is thrown into disarray by an oddly intrusive child; an artist returns from abroad to discover that her past has been eerily usurped.

With the deceptively light prose that is her hallmark, Tove Jansson reveals to us the precariousness of a journey – the unease we feel at being placed outside of our millieu, the restlessness and shadows that intrude upon a summer.

  • A brilliant new collection of stories, gripping and unnerving.
  • Introduced by Ali Smith.

First ever publication in English, in a translation by Silvester Mazzarella.

Tove Jansson Life, Art, Words – Paperback (SoB) £14.99

Tove Jansson Life, Art, Words – Paperback (SoB)

Tove Jansson Life, Art, Words – Paperback (SoB)

The Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomin stories, written between 1945 and 1970 and still in print in more than twenty languages. However, the Moomins were only a part of her prolific output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best loved author.

Tove Jansson’s work reflected the tenets of her life. Love and work was the motto she chose for herself and her approach to both was joyful and uncompromising. If her relationships with men were shaded by an ambivalence towards marriage, those with women came as a revelation, especially the love and companionship she found with her long-time partner, the artist Tuulikki Pietilä, with whom she shared her solitary island of Klovharu.

In this meticulously researched, authorised biography, Boel Westin draws together the many threads of Jansson’s life: from the studies interrupted to help her family; the bleak  war years and her emergence as an artist with a studio of her own; to the years of Moomin-mania, and later novel writing. Based on numerous conversations with Tove, and unprecedented access to her journals, letters and personal archives, Tove Jansson: Life, Art, Words offers a rare and privileged insight into the world of a writer whom Philip Pullman described, simply, as ‘a genius’.

The True Deceiver by Tove Jansson (SoB)

“The True Deceiver glitters with the kind of sharpness that might just cut you … It is one of Jansson’s most deceptively quiet, most astonishing compositions.”  Ali Smith

In the deep winter snows of a Swedish hamlet, a strange young woman fakes a break-in at the house of an elderly artist in order to persuade her that she needs companionship. But what does she hope to gain by doing this? And who ultimately is deceiving whom? In this portrayal of two women encircling each other with truth and lies, nothing can be taken for granted. By the time the snow thaws, both their lives will have changed irrevocably.

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (SoB)

A CLASSIC – AND A BESTSELLER (100,00 COPIES IN THE UK)

An elderly artist and her six-year-old grand-daughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. As the two learn to adjust to each other’s fears, whims and yearnings, a fierce yet understated love emerges – one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the very island itself.

Written in a clear, unsentimental style, full of brusque humour, and wisdom, The Summer Book is a profoundly life-affirming story. Tove Jansson captured much of her own life and spirit in the book, which was her favourite of her adult novels. This new edition, with a Foreword by Esther Freud, sees the return of a European literary gem – fresh, authentic and deeply humane.

The Listener by Tove Jansson (SoB) £8.99

The Listener by Tove Jansson (SoB)

The Listener by Tove Jansson (SoB)

Tove Jansson’s debut collection of short stories

Aunt Gerda – the good listener – fears the encroaching forgetfulness of old age. Her solution is to create an artwork that will record and, inevitably, betray the secrets long confided in her. So begins Jansson’s short story debut, a tour de force of scalpel-sharp narration that takes us from a disquieting homage to the artist Edward Gorey, to perfect evocations of childhood innocence and recklessness, to a city ravaged by storms, or the slow halting thaw of spring. These stories are gifts of originality and depth.

The Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomin stories, written between 1945 and 1970 and still in print in more than twenty languages. However, the Moomins were only a part of her prolific output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic and acclaimed novels and short stories. The Listener, translated here for the first time into English, was Jansson’s debut short story collection, written in 1970.

The Listener by Tove Jansson (SoB)

£8.99

Sculptor’s Daughter – Hardback (SoB)

Tove Jansson’s first book for adults drew on her childhood memories to capture afresh the enchantments and fears of growing up in Helsinki in the 1910s and 20s. Described as both a memoir and ‘a book of superb stories’ by Ali Smith, Jansson’s startlingly evocative prose offers a glimpse of the mysteries of winter ice, the bonhomie of balalaika parties, and the vastness of Christmas viewed from beneath the tree.

‘This is snow,’ Moomintroll whispered to himself.

Moomins always sleep through the winter – or they did until the year Moomintroll woke up and found he couldn’t go back to sleep again.

All the clocks had stopped, there was nothing to eat and no one to talk to at home, so he went out – straight into the first snowdrift he had ever seen.

The valley wasn’t green any more, it was white and silent and very scary. But then Moomintroll spied some tracks in the snow and decided to follow them. Maybe he wasn’t the only one awake in Moominvalley after all?

Jansson’s whimsical tales of Moominvalley resonate with children for their light-hearted spirit, and with adults for their incisive com-mentary on the banality of everyday life. 2014 marks the cente–nary of her birth, and Jansson is being honoured with events in England, Scandinavia, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia, Italy, Spain, and France. Drawn and Quarterly is joining the festivities by releasing Moomin: The deluxe anniversary edition, a slipcased, hardcover collection of the complete Tove Jansson-penned Moomin comic strip, replete with all of her most popular story–lines and original pencil sketches. It has been more than sixty years since the Moomin comic strip debuted in the London Eve–ning News. By the end of its run in 1975, Moomin was syndicated in more than forty newspapers around the world, and hailed for its light-handed, charming stories. The comics were revived in 2005 by Drawn and Quarterly and published to widespread acclaim, sparking a new genera–tion of devoted Moomin fans with international editions around the world.
Moomin: The deluxe anniversary edition celebrates the classic comics the world adores, and will feature an essay about Tove’s work on the Moomin strip.
